I love season changes, but fall is by far my favorite! I admit I am that mom who scrambles at the last minute to see what outfits I have for our fall family photos.

This year I have the fun challenge of being third-trimester pregnant. I don’t want just any dress; I want a perfect maternity bump-friendly dress. But not only that, it has to be postpartum-friendly and be able to make me feel human and pretty again. And that is no easy task when it comes to postpartum body changes. Moms, you know what I am talking about. It’s a real-life crisis sometimes! 🙂

I have found some modest maternity bump & postpartum fall family photo outfits, and hope this work well for you too!

How to Choose Postpartum Friendly Family Photo Outfits

I have become very picky as I get older, and wiser with clothes, so for me finding some outfits that fit postpartum is truly an exciting event in my life! I made a list for myself of criteria that my clothes have to meet. Here are my 5 main expectations for any of my outfits, whatever the season or where I am in life as a mother.

  • Fabrics: Lately, I have been trying to stick to particular fabrics (another story you will be hearing about soon).
  • Versatile: Very versatile where I can wear it whether I am pregnant, postpartum, nursing or in between babies.
  • Trendy: No one wants to stand out for last season outfits and colors, but sometimes we have to 🙂
  • Motherhood-friendly: It must be able to bear the wear and tear of daily life.
  • ABSOLUTELY MUST BE CUTE! We all want to look and feel cute, and we can!

These 5 points have saved me from just filling my closet with clothes that are cute, but hardly worn. It helps if you are trying to capsule your wardrobe as well. Yes, please, for me! Once I find that modest bump/postpartum friendly fall outfit, having my family outfits ready to go for pictures is so much easier and less stressful!

Modest & Postpartum Fall Family Photo Outfit Ideas

Besides these 5 expectations, here are some helpful tips on colors and styles that help guide you for your family fall outfits with you looking your best even if you feel like you aren’t.

Look 1: Warm earth tones

These earthy tones include rich rust, terracotta, burnt orange, ochre, deep browns, and olive green. They tend to be grounding and comfortable looking.

Look 2: Neutral & soft

These are your creams, beiges, tans, soft taupe, pale gray, and muted blush. These colors are timeless.

Look 3: Rich Autumn

Your emerald green, ruby/burgundy, mustard gold, plum and deep copper definitely are those colors that make bold statements.

What to Look for in a Postpartum-Friendly Dress

Finding styles that go well with both maternity bumps and postpartum is often very difficult. You don’t want to have your picture hanging on the wall and not bear to look at it because you feel like something is just not right about you. I am about to have number three and I know I will be exhausted and not want to sit there trying to find an outfit. Stretchy, comfortable and flattering are my guidelines here. These three styles, being timeless in those categories, often help hide your postpartum body.

Smocked Bustlines

These are my absolute favorite. They have the tightened top which pulls everything together. These are perfect for you nursing moms too. The added elastic smocking is, most of the time, easy to pull down and feed when your baby is struggling for your pictures. (nursing cover?)

Sweaters and Skirt Combos

These are so versatile. They not only flatter you naturally both with bumps or postpartum, but you can also still be modest and of course beautiful!

Wrap Silhouettes

I have become a sucker for some of these style of dresses, because they can be tightened or loosened as needed. One of the cons of these is if they are full wrap then you don’t want to wear these if you are taking pictures on windy days – unless you don’t mind pinning down so it doesn’t blow open completely.

Easy Color Coordination Tips for Toddlers and Husbands

Once you have your outfit figured out, finding your toddlers’ and husband’s outfits becomes such a simple thing. Coordinating outfits so that everyone looks put together but not perfectly matching would be the next thing to handle. Here are three looks that pair your outfit with your toddlers’ and husband’s.

Look 1: Warm earth tones

If you went with these tones, then your toddler and dad can mix colors like creams and olives. For example, you want to wear your terracotta outfit, then they can wear cream sweaters and olive pants.

Look 2: Neutral & soft

With these colors, sage green and tan would pair well with your oatmeal outfits.

Look 3: Rich Autumn

Let’s say you wanted to make some bold statement this year for your photos. An emerald green outfit paired with their mustard color or even denim would be perfect.

  2. Girls ruffle socks
  3. Girl long sleeve square neck dress

  8. Boys corduroy pants (brown)
  9. Girls long sleeve smocked dress
  10. Girls corduroy pinafore overall dress

Pro Tip for your TODDLERS’ outfits:

Too stiff of denim or itchy material can make your toddlers uncomfortable and cranky. Lean more towards the softer fibers. Soft corduroys, cottons and linens. Another thing is footwear that are comfortable too if you have ones that are just walking.
